Canadian Tire Centre? It's no 1-800-ASK-GARY Ampitheatre
It’s never easy renaming a revered icon such as a city’s beloved sports arena, especially when highly lucrative corporate sponsorships are involved. Sometimes it goes well . In these cases, what you’re hopefully left with is branding that pays the bills while also having a name that suits the building and its activities. Only two per cent of tweets were positive about the name “Canadian Tire Centre”, while 36 per cent were negative. Sometimes, however, it doesn’t go so well . And sometimes it just goes plain badly (so badly … Continue reading
Media Measurement: Counting your coverage
This is the second in a series of blog posts outlining media measurement for PR, communications and marketing professionals. You can forget about what Mark Twain said about statistics . As we talked about last time , the right kind of number crunching can be invaluable to your media monitoring and analysis strategy. But the industry’s approach to data is always in flux. New technology and new media bring with them more powerful tools and better data, while older methods have fallen out of favour. The Barcelona Declaration of Measurement Principles — which … Continue reading
Watch Twitter react to yesterday’s Apple WWDC keynote
Apple’s WWDC keynote may not include Steve Jobs anymore, but it still draws the attention of millions of Apple fans and developers from around the world. We tracked the hashtag #WWDC to get an idea which newly unveiled products people were most excited about (collecting nearly 195,000 tweets using this hashtag in less than 24 hours). The event included a futuristic-looking Mac Pro , a new OSX not named after a cat and, the coup de grace, a completely redesigned iOS . And while Twitter seems to have reacted the strongest to the new mobile operating system, … Continue reading
NHL Playoffs: The apathy, ecstasy, and agony of being an L.A. Kings fan
Those poor L.A. Kings fans. Well, hang on just a minute – before we feel too badly for supporters of that particular club, let’s remember they just won the Stanley Cup last year. So things aren’t all bad for fans of the silver-and-black club from Lotusland. But a peek at this weekend’s Twitter chatter surrounding Game 5 of the Los Angeles- Chicago Blackhawks series brings home just how heartbreaking this weekend’s loss was, if only in terms of sheer get-your-hopes-up-and-then-slam-them-into-the-dirt disappointment. It’s not like fans of the Kings were … Continue reading
NKOTB concert: Scotiabank Place avoids PR nightmare with timely communication
My 12-year-old inner self – like thousands of other New Kids On The Block fans last night – was slightly crushed with the news that their Ottawa concert was delayed a day. Originally scheduled to happen at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa on June 4, the show was postponed when the group’s equipment vehicles were delayed at the Canada-U.S. border. Instead of being outright cancelled, however, the NKOTB concert was postponed to June 5. Perez Hilton , however, didn’t make things any better by posting this on his celebrity news website. Tweets posted by fans, … Continue reading
Twitter reacts to the most heart-wrenching Game of Thrones yet
*** Major Spoiler Alert for Game of Thrones *** HBO’s Game of Thrones already has a reputation for brutal violence and offing major characters , but Sunday’s “The Rains of Castamere” took that to a whole new level. We tracked the hashtags #GoT and #GameofThrones to see how Twitter would react to the so-called Red Wedding . It’s an event fans of the books have been dreading, and it ends with the violent deaths of some of the show’s most beloved characters. To quickly recap: Robb Stark, … Continue reading
Media measurement and media analysis: Why bother?
This is the first in a series of blog posts outlining the importance of why media measurement matters for PR, communications and marketing professionals. There’s a surprising amount of controversy and debate around how to measure media coverage, of both the traditional and social variety. But there’s a more fundamental question that much of this controversy either skims or simply takes for granted: Why does measuring media coverage matter in the first place? The question can actually be broken down into … Continue reading
Porter Airlines expansion analysis reveals contrast in attitudes on traditional vs. social media
If you’re like me and you enjoy the convenience of flying right into downtown Toronto via Porter Airlines, no doubt you’ve been following the high-stakes sell job it has been conducting for both stakeholders and the public-at-large in Toronto regarding its planned expansion. We’ve been watching it too. That’s why today we’re announcing the results of a media analysis recently completed on coverage of Porter Airlines’ expansion plans, both in the form of an infographic and a more detailed, long-form report (the former can be downloaded directly , the latter is available by contacting MediaMiser ). … Continue reading
Social Media Camp: Analysis is great, but an infographic says it much better
As mentioned in previous blog posts, MediaMiser recently attended Social Media Camp in Victoria – the largest Social Media Camp in Canada – a few weeks ago. We had a great time! Since MediaMiser is all about everything to do with social and traditional media analytics, we collected and analyzed tweets about the event (in partnership with the organizers) and produced an infographic hopefully worthy of an event as influential as Social Media Camp. While at Social Media Camp, many of us attended the great sessions held during the … Continue reading
Analysis: Tiptoeing through the Canadian Tulip Festival
With the smell of spring in the air, MediaMiser took to the Twitterverse to see how the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa, Ont., fared this year on social media. According to MediaMiser’s Twitter analysis, which collected around 4,000 tweets mentioning the Canadian Tulip Festival from the beginning of May until early this week, the majority of tweets occurred on opening weekend and declined steadily since then. Tweets peaked on Saturday May 3, with 1,365, and the festival’s handle, @CdnTulipFest , was mentioned in around 18 … Continue reading
