Synopsis

On Dec. 7, 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the much-anticipated “Beyond the Border” Action Plan – an initiative designed to improve cross-border security while at the same time encouraging the free flow of people and goods.

But how did the media and public react to the announcement, in both the U.S. and Canada? And which issues were most important to media commentators both online and on TV and radio, and to those commenting on Twitter?

With the above in mind, MediaMiser used its patented software to ask:

  1. Which outlets and journalists led coverage and debate about Beyond the Border in December?
  2. Which users led the debate on Twitter in December, and were they mostly journalists and media outlets?
  3. Which issues received the most prominent share of voice on both Twitter and in media clips?
  4. What were the top links within Twitter posts?

Using keywords, MediaMiser collected a sample of 1,247 broadcast clips, 953 news articles from online media, and 2,577 tweets from Dec. 1 until Dec. 16. Toning of tweets and media stories to determine sentiment was not done for this report.
